Shopie Baby, Professor of Contemporary History in the University of Bourgogne (France) will be responsible for the third session of "The Magnànim Discussion" , entitled The violent transition, which will be held in the MuVIM auditorium on Thursday 28 February and will be introduced by Ferrán Archilés (Professor of Contemporary History in the University of Valencia).
The passage from Franco’s dictatorship to democracy has been a point of contention due to the divergent interpretations of the process defended by the different ideologies. But what seems to be beyond dispute is that the Spanish transition was anything but a peaceful transition, as Baby has proved with her book El mito de la transición pacífica. Violencia y política en España (1975-1982). (The myth of the peaceful transition. Violence and politcs in Spain 1975-1982) published in 2012 in French and recently translated into Spanish. ETA terrorists were certainly the most lethal group but neither the far right’s actions, responsible for 67 murders, nor the State security forces’ violence, which caused 178 deads, half of them civil protesters or passers-by, can be left out. The speech will be in Spanish.
